Buying An Antique Porcelain Baby Doll - Tips, Prices And Options

There are two kinds of antique porcelain baby dolls.  Some antique porcelain dolls are in fact not genuine antiques; they are only antique in style.  This means they are made by modern day doll companies in an antique style. These kinds of dolls are also collectible dolls, just as the genuine antiques are, but they often cost less and they are a lot easier to find.  Many online retail sites such as Amazon.com and Buy.com will sell a good selection of these kinds of dolls.

However, if you want a genuine antique porcelain baby doll, you would look at other online sites.  Sites that sell used items are a good place to look for these; try checking out eBay, Ruby Lane.com, Tias.com and Etsy.com.  These sites often have antique dolls both in miniature and larger sizes at quite affordable prices. If you have a doll collection and are trying to add onto it, then you may want to bookmark these sites and check them on a regular basis to see whether new items that you are interested in purchasing have been added.

The prices vary a lot depending on where you purchase the doll and the exact collectible porcelain baby doll you are looking for.  A few German dolls selling at the above mentioned sites are Antique German Porcelain Bisque Baby Phyllis Doll by Armand Marseille, selling for $595. When buying a genuine antique, especially if it is an expensive one that will be added to your collection, make sure the seller is able to provide either a certificate of authenticity or some other form of proof that the doll is genuine.  If the seller cannot supply such proof, you may want to reconsider whether you should buy the doll, if it is an expensive one.  If is more affordable, you may want to consider buying the doll anyway and have it appraised by an expert later.
